Getting Voted In: Legalizing Marijuana

Advocates for legalized marijuana are coming out of the cracks as political campaigns for state and local elections heat up around the country. Recently, Anne Armstrong, who is a write-in candidate for the governor of Rhode Island, took a hit of what she called pot for a campaign video. Armstrong, who claims she smokes cannabis daily for health reasons, said a key part of her campaign will be focused on the legalization of marijuana and added that the government has lied to us about the health benefits of pot.

Here are some memorable quotes from several U.S. politicians on the issue of marijuana:

“I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an H-bomb blast” – Ronald Reagan

“Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country.” – Thomas Jefferson

“When I was a kid I inhaled frequently. That was the point.” – Barack Obama

“When I was in England, I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn’t like it, and I didn’t inhale, and I never tried again.” – Bill Clinton

“Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marihuana in private for personal use… Therefore, I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana.” – Jimmy Carter

“That is not a drug. It’s a leaf.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

“Congress should definitely consider decriminalizing possession of marijuana. We should concentrate on prosecuting the rapists and burglars who are a menace to society.” – Dan Quayle
