The start of this week, Sunday, March 2nd was the birthday of a well-loved and celebrated author from Massachusetts. His name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, but is better known to millions as Dr. Seuss.
If you were born after the 1940s, you’ve probably read a number of Dr. Seuss’ works, either as a child or as an adult reading to your own children. Dr. Seuss had a rough start to his writing career, but after it got going, he was a publishing machine.
He wrote 44 children’s books during his career and these books have sold over 500 million copies around the globe. In his long life of 87 years he was able to reach hundreds of millions of people with fascinating, entertaining, and memorable stories. Not many authors leave the world having accomplished as much as Dr. Seuss did.
Even though this famed and beloved author left us in 1991, we wanted to celebrate what would have been Dr. Seuss’ 100th birthday with a collection of some of his best, most inspiring quotes. Here they are:
One of the most inspiring quotes, but said with such simple language: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”
On valuing moments: “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.”
On what’s really important in life: “’Maybe Christmas’, he thought, ‘Doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.’”
On being yourself: “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
One of Dr. Seuss’ most frequently quoted: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
There are plenty more quotes out there from Dr. Seuss. If you think we’re missing some important ones, let us know!
