Fifty-five years ago today, the Space Act was signed into law, creating the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, better known as NASA. Since that time NASA has gone on to contribute to the world in countless ways. Not only did they send men to the moon, but they helped create a generation of people (and scientists) interested in space and exploration.
In recent years they have sent countless satellites into space. Their latest efforts have involved sending rovers to Mars, the latest being the massive Curiosity rover which has been widely popular in the US and throughout the world.
For 55 years NASA has been inspiring the US and the world. They’ve given us heroes and leaders. July 29th marks NASA’s birthday and here at NaQ we wanted to take a moment to share quotes that relate to NASA or invoke the spirit of exploration and scientific discovery that defines the great organization.
Recognizing NASA is more important than ever, as there are continuous threats to defund, underfund, or cut many of its programs. If you’re a supporter of NASA you’ll love these quotes, and if not, maybe it will convince you that NASA is worth keeping around for 55 more years!
Bill Nye on NASA: “NASA is an engine of innovation and inspiration as well as the world’s premier space exploration agency, and we are well served by politicians working to keep it that way, instead of turning it into a mere jobs program, or worse, cutting its budget.”
James Lovelock on one of NASA’s greatest contributions: “We’d never have got a chance to go outside and look at the earth if it hadn’t been for space exploration and NASA.”
Robert Goddard on impossibility: “It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and reality of tomorrow.”
Krafft A. Ehricke on the benefits of exploration for men, fitting since he was a rocket pioneer: “Man’s mind and spirit grow with the space in which they are allowed to operate”
Lastly, President Nixon on the first lunar landings and how important they were for mankind: “because of what you have done the heavens have become part of man’s world… For one priceless moment in the whole history of man all of the people on this Earth are truly one.”
Now that you’ve read these quotes, take a moment to reflect on NASA. If you know of any quotes about NASA feel free to share them with us at NaQ!
