Honoring President’s Day

Many people don’t realize it, but President’s Day was actually created in 1971 to give more three-day weekends to workers. Before 1971, most states celebrated the birthday of the country’s first President, George Washington, which is February 22nd. The law in 1971 changed the date to lie between the birthdays of President Lincoln and President Washington.

Today, depending on where you work, you might get President’s Day off, or you may not. Some states honor specific presidents during the holiday instead of all of them. Even businesses get in on the holiday and promote numerous sales to get consumers out and into their stores, spending money on their day off.

The holiday is also a great day to look back on the presidents who have served the United States over the years. Ultimately, it’s a holiday celebrating the wisdom and leadership of the nation’s leaders. Over the history of the US, the country’s presidents have said some pretty amazing things. Here we share a few of those quotes from presidents – some of whom are still with us and others from decades past. Much of their advice and wisdom still applies today.

George H.W. Bush, on the importance of education: “Think about every problem, every challenge, we face. The solution to each starts with education.”

President Barack Obama, delivering one of the lines that gained him so much support during his campaign: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

President Franklin D. Roosevelt, demonstrating his wisdom: “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.”

One of the most famous and well-known presidents, John F. Kennedy, on leading America: “Let us resolve to be masters, not the victims, of our history, controlling our own destiny without giving way to blind suspicions and emotions.”

Thomas Jefferson, on honesty: “Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom.”
