This week, an American music icon would have turned 70 years old. In the US, Jimi Hendrix was one of the most innovative and unique artists to come out of the late 1960s and 70s. His music spanned a wide variety of topics, and he often offended many mainstream views in some of his music.
Hendrix helped turn guitar amp feedback into a form of music itself and used the wah-wah pedal frequently. His band was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. He and the band received numerous awards, alive and posthumously.
In honor of this legendary music icon we thought we’d provide some revealing and interesting quotes from the musician.
Talking on his seemingly new genre of music: “We don’t want to be classed in any category. If it must have a tag, I’d like it to be called ‘Free Feeling.’ It’s a mixture of rock, freak-out, blues, and rave music.”
About musical talents of the time: “They’re [The Beatles] one group that you can’t really put down because they’re just too much. And it’s so embarrassing, man, when America is sending over the Monkees — oh, God, that kills me!”
On his stardom: “I don’t want to be a clown anymore. I don’t want to be a ‘rock ‘n’ roll star.”
On simplifying his life: “I started cutting my hair and losing jewelry, ring by ring, until I had none left. The freaky thing was never a publicity hype — that was just the way I was then. If I felt like dressing up, I did. If I felt like smashing a guitar, I worked up some anger and smashed. The anger has dissipated and I don’t feel the need to dress up so much now I see others doing it.”
Jimi Hendrix was a very influential figure in music and in our popular culture. It’s a shame we lost him at such an early age. Have any more Jimi Hendrix quotes? Feel free to add some to our library!
