If you haven’t heard this week yet, early on Monday morning, NASA’s newest one-ton Mars Rover, Curiosity, landed successfully on the surface of Mars. And that is one serious achievement.
MSNBC tells us why as he stated, “At 2,000 pounds and the size of a Mini Cooper, Curiosity is the largest and heaviest vehicle ever sent to the Red Planet.” Some people can’t even park a truck in a parking spot. These scientists have managed to park what is essentially a nuclear-powered truck with a science lab in it onto a crater 35 million miles away.
The Curiosity mission plans to study a whole host of things on Mars. The rover itself has at least 10 different apparatuses designed to study the environment around it. Its main goal is a 3-mile high mountain in the middle of the crater. There, scientists hope to gain a greater understanding of Martian geology and determine the reasons why it ended up a dry and red planet.
Curiosity will not be quiet during its mission though. NASA has been actively tweeting its activities, and they are wonderful tweets. So, without further ado, here are some great Curiosity quotes!
“Entering Mars’ atmosphere. 7. Minutes. Of. Terror. Starts. NOW.”
“It once was one small step…now it’s six big wheels. Here’s a look at one of them on the soil of Mars.”
“Backshell separation. It’s just you & me now, descent stage. Engage all retrorockets!”
“Parachute deployed! Velocity 900 mph. Altitute 7 miles. 4 minutes to Mars!”
One of our favorites here at NaQ.com: “I’m safely on the surface of Mars. GALE CRATER I AM IN YOU!!!”
It was an intense morning for anyone who stayed up to follow the Curiosity’s twitter feed. We’re incredibly happy the landing was a success. There’s no telling what NASA is going to learn from the rover’s work. If you haven’t already, be sure to follow Curiosity’s twitter feed so you don’t miss out on anymore history in the making! Or any more great quotes for that matter!
