Remembering Nelson Mandela

Last week, the world lost one of the greatest leaders and fighters: Nelson Mandela. Mandela passed away on December 5, 2013, at the venerable age of 95. His life was long and extremely eventful. Over the course of many decades, he was able to impact not only his fellow countrymen, but the entire world. He is a figure known and respected by the world, despite imprisonment and struggle for over 25 years.

Mandela leaves behind a powerful legacy of fighting against injustice. Of course, his life was full of difficult choices that he had to make, and there are some that question his methods during the early years of his resistance to apartheid. Still, a vast majority of people understand that his cause was just and that some of his questionable actions were justified.

Remembering all that Mandela accomplished is important. Here at NaQ, we wanted to share with you some of Mandela’s best quotes that show how great of a man and leader he was.

On caring for others: “A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of.”

On the power of education: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

A life lesson on courage: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Mandela’s wisdom on hatred and resentment: “Resentment is like drinking poison, and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”

On his persistence, which helped him overcome imprisonment and many challenges in life: “Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end.”
