There are plenty of celebrities in the world saying things that people find worthy of their attention. However, it’s not every day that people are graced with the words of a Nobel Prize winner. These people are often far more important to listen to than the people that the media focuses on, yet they never get the attention they deserve. Sadly, this week one Nobel Prize winner passed away at the old age of 94. Her name was Doris Lessing.
Doris Lessing was a well known British writer whose work encompassed a wide variety of genres. She was a champion and fighter for women, and her works brought well-deserved attention to the experience of women throughout the world. She was only the eleventh woman to receive the Nobel Prize, as well as the oldest recipient.
Doris Lessing had an interesting life, moving from Iran to Africa, and ended up being self-educated after the age of 14. Her works have inspired and provoked thought for many years. With that in mind, we thought we’d share some of her best quotes:
On being honest with yourself: “What’s terrible is to pretend that second-rate is first-rate. To pretend that you don’t need love when you do; or you like your work when you know quite well you’re capable of better.”
On a very thoughtful view of loneliness: “Loneliness, she thought, was craving for other people’s company. But she did not know that loneliness can be an unnoticed cramping of the spirit for lack of companionship.”
Upon winning the Nobel Prize, Doris hilariously said: “Oh Christ! I’m sure you’d like some uplifting remarks of some kind.”
On men, a common topic and criticism of Doris’: “I find myself increasingly shocked at the unthinking and automatic rubbishing of men which is now so part of our culture that it is hardly even noticed.”
These are just a few of the remarks and statements that Doris has made in her long career. It’s sad when the world loses someone so unique and intelligent. Be sure to check out some of her works if these quotes interested you. If you know of others, be sure to submit them to our database as well!
