If you haven’t heard already this week, there’s a pretty awful quote going around the media and in the world of politics. It comes from Representative Todd Akin, who is running for Senate in Missouri, and it was stated during discussions on The Jaco Report.
So what exactly did he say? In discussing topics relating to women’s issues and abortion in cases of rape, Todd Akin said:
“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”
If you can’t tell from reading that once, Todd Akin is in some big trouble in the world of politics, and especially from women.
People are mostly upset by his lack of understanding and compassion for women in cases of rape. Representative Akin has since come out in a statement clarifying what he meant, claiming he misspoke. It doesn’t look as if it will be able to fix the damage that has already been done to his character and campaign.
He’s currently in competition with Senator Claire McCaskill in a contested and watched election in Missouri. This Todd Akin’s quote could end up costing him a victory. At the very least, he will have a much harder time defeating his opponent, McCaskill.
The world of politics never fails to offer amazing (in good and bad ways) things that people have said. We’ll be keeping an eye on the next time a politician says something inspiring, or embarrassing. Until next time!
