When it comes to award shows, many people immediately think about shows like the Grammys, the Oscars, and the Emmys. This is a common reaction because the film industry has cultivated the power to reach hundreds of millions of people far easier than other forms of art.
However, there are other award shows that recognize art and performance. The Tony Awards occur every year in New York City to commemorate and honor the theater and Broadway performances of the year. This year was no different and the 68th Tony Awards went off without a hitch.
For theater and Broadway fans, the night is a great way to see their favorite performers in a different light. Not surprisingly, many Hollywood celebrities were at the awards show in force, as many of these actors and actresses dabble in theater as well.
There were some great speeches from the evening. Here are some of the best quotes from this year’s Tony Awards:
Bryan Cranston who won best actor in Broadway debut: “My first Broadway play was in 1977. I snuck into the second act of Hair. To this day, I still haven’t seen the first act. They tell me the second act was better because there was more nudity so I feel blessed.”
Sophie Okenedo on her coworkers: “I work with proper, proper actors and they hold and carry me and love me on stage every night.”
Audra McDonald on her parents: “I want to thank my mom and my dad up in heaven for disobeying the doctor’s orders and not medicating their hyperactive girl and finding out what she was into instead and pushing her into the theatre.”
Darko Tresnjak thanking his mother: “My mom literally taught me to jump out of airplanes. She fought during the Second World War. She was a skydiver in the 1940s. She’s 87-years-old and she’s too frail to be here tonight so I’m gonna thank her. Momma (speaking in Serbian) – thank you very much.”
